Kilarden Special Open Day, celebrating 25 years of opening for charity with Scotland's Gardens!

23rd April | 2.00 - 5.00 pm

As seen on the "Beechgrove Garden” Kilarden is a sheltered hilly garden with Rhododendrons in a ten acre woodland. There is a notable collection of species and hybrid rhododendrons gathered over a period of fifty years by the late Neil and Joyce Rutherford.

In April 2016 one of the many examples of Rhododendron macabeanum won first prize in the the class for species in the Grandia and Falconera sections. In recent years 200 year old trees have been felled by hurricane force winds. More light is available to rhododendrons and views of surrounding areas have appeared. An orchard planted with apple trees and soft fruit including blueberries during the last 17 years is productive. An adjacent area has been cleared of 80 sitka and norway spruce (40 years old) which lets more light into the garden.
