KILARDEN SPECIAL OPEN DAY

14th April | 2.00 - 5.00 pm

This is a very interesting year as the winter has been so mild. Rhododendrons have been flowering at least 3 weeks earlier than usual.

While other areas have been having frosts here on the east side of the peninsula as I write we have been sheltered from the frosts and rhododendrons have been blooming with a density of flower not experienced by me in 20 years. I imagine that the intensity of light last year in the good summer has a lot to do with it. The grandia group have been particularly good but they will be followed by the falconera group both of which have the large leaves which are so spectacular. (One has a narrower leaf and a shiny underside and the other a broader leaf and velvety underside though exceptions do apply.)Thereafter the triflora, nerriflora, taliensia and maddenia groups follow.

So on 14th April there will be a lot to see and hear. There will be a very good afternoon teas in the Church hall at Rosneath, the organ will be being played in the Church, there will be a good varied plant stall and Shandon ukulele band will play. For those who have been following the development of the garden over the last 20 years yet more areas of rhododendron ponticum or its hybrids have been cleared enabling better views particularly of the lovely 70+ year old plants never mind the ones brought 20 years ago from Edinburgh. I look forward to welcoming you to the garden.
